PECTA Experts Workshop on Wide Band Gap Semiconductor Technologies

The International Energy Agency's Technology Collaboration Program (IEA TCP) PECTA - Power Electronics Conversion Technology Annex aims to explore SiC (silicon carbide) and GaN (gallium nitride) based Wide Band Gap (WBG) semiconductor technologies. WBG semiconductor technologies show significantly improved energy efficiency, and thus great potential to replace conventional Si-based (silicon) semiconductors. The energy efficiency potential of WBG semiconductors will be further explored in a total of 6 PECTA Tasks:

Task A: Completion and updating available efficiency figures, to investigate the efficiency potential for selected products.

Task B: Energy and environmental related Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), to investigate the environmental and energy impacts of WBG semiconductors along their life cycle. This task is led by the ECODESIGN company, and elaborated with the support of experts from the Vienna University of Technology.

Task C: Update of elaborated Application Readiness Map (ARM), to investigate the development and application of WBG technologies until 2035.

Task D: Policy measures and mapping with applications over a timeline, to investigate existing regulations for WBG semiconductors, and to develop efficiency-enhancing measures.

Task E: Standards to support WBG adoption, to develop technical standards, including energy efficiency standards, for WBG semiconductors.

Task F: Measurement of power supply efficiency, to study the power supply efficiency of WBG-based and Si-based power supplies for ICT applications.

A detailed description of the tasks can be found on the official PECTA website. These tasks and preliminary results were discussed in the third PECTA workshop. More than 30 participants, including task leaders and representatives from research and industry, took part.
