Sustainability evaluation of planned building concepts

To support the tender for the expansion of the Donau Universität Krems the ECODESIGN company developed a tool to evaluate the energy performance of planned building concepts. Using specific sustainability criteria, the tender submissions were evaluated, compared and selected in a two step process.

In a first step, the applicants were evaluated based on existing reference projects to determine their suitability in terms of knowledge on energy efficiency, implementation of innovative cooling or lighting concepts, performing energy monitoring, etc.

In a second step, the applicants submitted a detailed plan for the building concept. Taking into account building sustainability assessment methods such as DGNB and LEED, an evaluation tool was developed for the building concepts. Examples of criteria in this evaluation tool are the energy efficiency, the integration and use of renewable energy sources, the (public) transport concept, energy consumption (incl. lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation and water heating) and the grey energy contained in the building materials.

The results were presented in individual applicant profiles, in a graphical and explanatory (text) form, and also in an overview showing a coparison of the applicants' concepts and the results in all cirteria in the second step. Using this ECODESIGN evaluation and comparison tool, long-term sustainability aspects of the planned building concepts could be taken into account for decision making in the tender process.
